MCP server for D2L Brightspace with multi-strategy authentication, TOTP/MFA support, retry + circuit breaker + cache tiers, and opt-in write operations.

Install

Via npx (recommended)

Configure

Create ~/.brightspace-mcp/config.yaml:

Then export your token and run the server:

Setup wizard (easiest path)

Run the interactive setup:

npx brightspace-mcp setup

The wizard:

  • Asks for your Brightspace base URL and chosen auth strategy (API token, browser, OAuth, etc.)
  • If TOTP MFA, walks through saving the secret via env var / keychain / encrypted file
  • Writes ~/.brightspace-mcp/config.yaml with 0600 permissions
  • Auto-detects Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf — offers to register this server in each

Enabling write operations

Write tools (submit_assignment, post_discussion_reply, mark_announcement_read) are OFF by default. To enable:

  1. In ~/.brightspace-mcp/config.yaml:

    writes:
      enabled: true
      dry_run: false  # set true to preview without mutating D2L
    
  2. Pass --enable-writes to serve:

    brightspace-mcp serve --enable-writes
    

Both gates are required. All writes:

  • Require a client-supplied idempotency_key (8-128 chars) — repeat calls with the same key return the cached response without re-executing against D2L.
  • Emit a WARN-level audit log line with correlation ID + tool + redacted args.
  • Honor writes.dry_run: true to return a preview without calling D2L.
